I found this yesterday in a local antiques shop. It is only 95mm tall (3 3/4" approx) but it weighs over 200g. The base has a "snapped" pontil mark and is recessed. The top outer edge has a flame finish. The colour reminds me of Vasart, although the shape does not. It has been blown and then encased in clear glass. A lovely small piece which cost very little. Any thoughts?

hi - in view of your comments about the base may we please see a picture of the underside. :)
Hope someone recognizes your piece - the only recessed pontil area that I can think of immediately is Alum Bay, although it doesn't look especially like theirs.
The shape of those marvered bluish flat scales looks not a lot unlike Mtarfa (Maltese), but not my area so guessing only I'm afraid.

Picture of the base attached. When I first picked-up this vase I immediately thought "vintage" due to the pontil. I thought that most modern vases were ground flat and that Maltese vases were generally signed. I normally collect Whitefriars but am prone to collecting other pieces that intrigue me along the way! Any thoughts will fire me off in that general direction. Thank you.

Sorry to be a pain, but could we see an image with the light reflecting off the surface, rather then coming through it?
The pattern in the glass reminds me very much of the one produced by Isle of Wight Studio Glass and was one of the designs given to start Kerry Glass off. The colourways were called Peat, Shamrock and Heather, this would be Heather, I think, IF this is what it is. I'm not completely sure about the shape, and the pontil scar would be an unusual feature. Normally, it would have been finished off with a blob of glass put over the scar and impressed with the flame logo.

Do these help? A very difficult area to photograph clearly. The pontil scar does look similar to the late 18th century drinking glasses that I have in some respects. Looking at Maltese glass, would the base have been ground flat?

Sue meant the whole vase, not the base. The pontil mark is only one clue in who and when.

It's still too confusing to make out the pattern, because there is light coming through it and I can see tha back side at the same time as the front.
Does it resemble the patterns shown here, on Anton's site?

I have attached a close-up of the vase top, similar to picture 1. It is defo not Kerry glass as I have contacted them.
Please keep suggestions coming.

I would very much doubt Isle of Wight Studio Glass, not with such a thick cased bottom part; and they would have finished the base off differently by the time the similar design came out.
Kerry was the only place I could think of for a pattern anything like this. ???
