Title: Green handled grapefruit? dish help please.
Post by: brucebanner on December 30, 2014, 07:12:37 PM
A set of these has been sitting in a local charity shop for months. I have been curious about them since i first clapped eyes on them, they have a crackle glass look to them and i have several glass silver rimed pieces dating to around 1914 with similar handles, i think these may be 40's at a guess, no wear to the bases and they look well made, i think these might be impossible to date or pin a maker on them so here goes.

There 4 1/2 inches across the rim 2 1/2 inches in height and 2 7/8th inches across the base.

regards Chris

hello Chris  -  I think you're justified in being pessimistic about finding a maker, and date wise you may not get any nearer than c. middle third of C20.
Sorry for being picky but the shape doesn't look like a traditional grapefruit - mostly in view of the lack of the up-turned rim on the foot - bowl also might be considered too shallow.
Handle has very distinctive shape  -  could be for a desert of some kind though.       Presumably the decor is some form of moulded effect.

Thanks for replying Paul there all completly different, and look hand made not a factory mould, a really unusual shape.

The inner surface is smooth and ribbed where the outer more rough to the touch.
