Does anyone recognize this piece? Based on the "break off" part on the bottom of it I believe it to be very old. The GAR I think stands for "Grand Army of the Republic".

Hi. This is a common style of paperweight from Belgium and the Alsace area, also Czechoslovakia. However, the style was carried to many US Mid West glass factories with immigrant glass workers, so it might have been made in the US (in which case Grand Army of the Republic could well be correct). It probably dates to the 1880 - 1920 period.

Thanks for the reply Alan, much appreciated. Since this post I received confirmation from a military forum that this piece was given out in 1897 during a Grand Army of the Republic commemorative ceremony.
