Title: Bohemian Engraved Perfume
Post by: Ohio on January 12, 2015, 06:50:29 PM
Found this week & thought I’d share it. Ruby cased 10 sided blank, blown polished pontil, 7" height with stopper, only 2 1/2" diameter at bottom. Full 360 degree engraving, forest scene, birds, deer, trees, etc. even the tiny 1" stopper engraved on each side. Photo does not do justice to engraving, even the small hairs on the animals are visible. Best one I've ever found & I don't know how they did this type of work on such a small piece, must have taken many hours & alot of skill.

wonderful piece and very attractive - thanks for sharing :)  -  are you saying 'cased' meaning a type of flashing (a very thin coating of red glass apparently), or might this be a cold process staining similar to the Egermann pieces? :)

Thanks Paul, yes there is a layer of red over clear & although the piece is small the glass is 1/8" thick. Could be its flashed, but I said cased out of habit because over here if we say flashed we mean a layer of colored lacquer has been applied to provide a stain not two layers of glass. Its probably a different meaning on your side of the pond. Ken

I suspect this is the blind leading the blind ;D  -  am sure I know less than you, but was unsure if the red was the typical European cheaper cold process of staining, or the (presumably) better quality method of dipping into liquid red glass to give very thin coating, and called (over here) flashing.

Guess that in the flesh it's possible to tell the difference, but probably not so on the screen, but with that quality of engraving it may well be two layers of glass.

None of which helps you with id.
