Title: Trumpet Bowl Wine Glass Age Help Please
Post by: RoyJ99 on January 14, 2015, 02:08:59 PM
Another glass from the charity shop. Nice wine glass with a trumpet bowl, semi faceted, baluster stem and partially polished pontil mark. Measures 12.5cm in height and 6cm across the foot. The glass is bright and clear with a few small inclusions. At a guess I'd date it at the latter part of the 19thC.

nice glass and in view of its origin, hopefully inexpensive - won't argue with you about the date, although these things never entirely easy to pin down, and some leeway on age always possible.         Looks to have some wear around the outer foot rim.

Hope you won't object to some suggestions regarding your description............ :)
My opinion on the bowl is more likely to be funnel or conical - trumpet tends to show more flaring, and this one looks to be fairly straight sided, and the cutting is generally referred to as slice or panel cutting rather than faceting.
The lower knop is a true baluster, and the addition of the upper one might have been someone trying to make this appear a little older - C18 glasses are often seen with multiple knops.

Unusual to see so much of the pontil scar remaining, even after what appears to be some considerable grinding/polishing.            Does this ring when flicked, or thud only :)

Hi Paul, no objections at all, I'm still very much an amateur collector and I'm here to learn. The glass only cost me £3 so yeah inexpensive, my aim is to buy such items to learn from before delving into older and more expensive items.

In answer to your question it rings like a bell when flicked.

Also with regards to the shape it does appear to be more curved in real life, not sure if that is just an optical illusion though. I will try and take some more pictures from different angles over the next few days.
