Title: Wrythen Decanter help please.
Post by: brucebanner on January 20, 2015, 09:18:05 PM
Any thoughts on this please, it has a lovely grey colour, no seeds, no base wear, the top looks well finished and the inner neck is angled inwards, the glass is very thick, 1cm in places, the base looks moulded, there is no pontil.

It's 8 inches in height 5 inches at it's widest point and the rim 1 7/8th inches across, the hole for the stopper is tiny a half inch across.

Regards Chris.

 Hi ,
Did you ask the seller which glass experts had dated it to 1730 ish as my feeling was that it was much much later , only made in an earlier style , the lack of pontil mark and the ground rim and thickness of glass suggest continental to me and more than likely 20th c in date , i can't recall anything with those characteristics that was made in the 18th c

cheers ,
         Peter.

ps   it is also not flammiform, it would be more correctly described as wrythened gadrooning, mould blown with a double gather probably.

Hello Pete, i was prepared for a disapointment before i left to pick this up, i like the seller he is a character and often has some lovely pieces of glass even if the descriptions are a little wonkey, it's a lovely looking piece of glass of though and i think i did not pay over the odds, he is right though it is museum quality.

Hello Chris  -  where does the reference to '1730 ish' come from  -  and would be interested to know those characteristics that qualify this as 'museum quality'?  :)  :)

I'd agree the absence of base scar indicates C20.

from experience, the lives of decanters are rarely 'unused', and unless a piece has been professionally restored/cleaned than I'd expect to see wear and internal clouding to some degree if this was anything more than 40 - 50 years old. :)

there is a very good chapter on mould decorated decanters in Andy McConnell's book - it seems that dating C18 examples is far from easy, and they appear to have a limited style of decoration.

The museum quality was a hint at sarcasm, Pete is reffering to the listing, type this into the eBay search bar 371234643602.
