Title: Julio Santos glasses
Post by: misha on February 13, 2015, 12:48:50 PM
Was worth going a little out of my way
to visit a Charity Shop today.
I heard the unloved orphans calling me.  ;)
Perfect condition - too cheap.

Only problem is.... I never drink grog,
so they will only be admired, pretty they are.

Should it be said...
Julio Santos is the oldest, longest working glass artist in Australia now?

Signed: J. Santos [no date]
Small size: 140mm H. 75ml

In the image one appears to have more entrained bubbles.
No, they are very similar in this detail - camera angle and lighting distortion.

They come in various shapes. Here are two more. I think we have some like yours, too.

I'm not sure Julio Santos is still working, but even if not he surely had the longest working life of any Australian glassblower.

Digging around, I found a few more specimens in various shapes. I'm sure there are other styles out there.

In chat at the last glass conference I was told he has stopped blowing - I think by Stephen Skillitzi but I am not certain.  I think the longest worker may actually go to Alisdair Gordon who it seems has been engraving for ever(must be pushing 60+ years.  Julio(pronounced Julio not Hulio) seems to have had two basic styles.  Bubbled glass like these or pulled spiral(surface or internal).  Here are a few examples I own.

Need to unpack for an image of a fair sized blue bowl with white feathered trails I have here too.  Can't say I've seen others of his like this.

Perhaps too much glass.  Too much for the small space I have at least.
