Title: Gold enameled wine glass?
Post by: bat20 on February 14, 2015, 02:15:48 PM
Hi all,I can't work this glass out with a modern shape, clear glass and a ring, but it does have a broken pontil and strong striations  towards the top of the bowl,I'm guessing continental with a flat edge to the foot,it's 13cm ht any thoughts many thanks.

It is a bit of an odd one. I agree that the shape is somewhat modern but the decoration reminiscent of 1780-1840 or so - perhaps European?

as we've said before, the pontil scar isn't any guarantee of age, unfortunately, and in view of the bowl shape - which appears not to have its counterpart prior to the C20 in a wine -  then this is copying some features from the C19, but with a modern bowl.
In fact the bowl looks as though it owes more to a late C18 dwarf ale than a wine glass - presumably a two pieces glass - bowl with drawn stem and added foot, and I'd go with Stuarts comments about Continental origin.
Is this sort of foot edge more common from the Continent that the U.K. - not sure?
Striations don't really help - most hand made pieces will show these marks in the top third of the bowl.

My opinion on the gilding is that it's poor quality, and rather abstract in design.

bat doesn't mention wear (or lack of) - am sure than if this were antique then there'd be some on the foot - is the foot flat or slightly conical?
Might even be a mid C20 copy of an older design  -  Kosta, for example did antique looking styles with gilding around that time  -  not that I'm suggesting this is Kosta.

Well, you said you wanted 'thoughts' :)

Yup sorry ,should have given more information, not an air bubble in sight or any bits trapped in the glass,it doesn't sit flat and has wear you can feel with your nail on the two bits of the foot it does sit on,the glass is bright with higher range ring tone not lasting long ,also not much wear to the gilding just a bit on the rim.
