Title: Help with ID for black plinth please .
Post by: davem on February 26, 2015, 04:57:03 PM
Hi ,
Help with ID for black plinth please .
Measures 4" across at widest x 1.25" high. Void is 3" across.
I'm not sure if a figure should fit into it or the other way up !
Thanks as always for any help , Dave.

with plinths, it's the recessed sides that are hidden, usually.          What does the other surface look like Dave - and which of the two rims appears to have the most wear?

Thanks for your help Paul .

The flat side has a couple of chips at the rim , other than that It's very hard to see which side has the most wear so I can not give a definite answer , this picture shows the other side .
I could well be wrong but the shape just looks wrong when the  flat side is on top .
Dave.

(I have to pop out for a few hours now so please excuse me for not responding)

There looks to be no wear or scratches within the flat side , where it does look like there is matting in the last picture it is not !

What we need to see is a straight on profile with the flat side at the top please

I haven't helped yet ;D

don't think I've ever seen this particular shape  -  but as for plinths in general, charity shops often display them with the cavity uppermost, believing them to be some sort of tray or container.     Probably all those I've seen seem to have a design profile that has some form of pyramidal outline, and when placed the correct way up, show a slightly raised edge rim or bead, into which the main display glass sits.

This is very unusual, perhaps it has 'never seen action' :)

But we haven't got a straight side on profile with the flat side at the top. That is what I would like to see please
Like this; taken so your camera is eye level with the plinth. Your other profile is at an angle

So sorry for the long delay in getting back with a profile picture here Lustrousstone , had a bit of a rough week.
I had not thought of this being part of a box Pamela , it would make sense !
First pic is flat side up , 2nd pic is flat side down .
Thanks again for your help , Dave.

Possibly a patch box missing lid. Although examples shown are company and time specific. Type probably made into the 1920's. Many makers and countries

Thanks Cagney , It more than likely is a base or lid of a box . It stumped me as it's so similar to plinths only upside down . Thanks for everyones help . Dave.
