Title: Barovier and Toso?
Post by: BobKegeles on March 10, 2015, 11:21:11 PM
This piece is unlabeled, it seems to clearly be a Barovier and Toso. However I've seen a very similar piece attributed to Edinburgh Crystal, though of course that attribution could well be wrong.

There is a bit of a problem with Edinburgh Crystal attributions. That company did, apparently, at one time, sell a range of Murano-made weights as items commissioned by themselves. But a lack of catalogue information within collector circles means we cannot be sure what those weights actually looked like.

A "background statement" first: to my knowledge, Edinburgh Crystal never produced any millefiori paperweights. In the mid-1980ies they commissioned some from Caithness (see here (http://www.scotlandsglass.co.uk/cms/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=305&Itemid=51)) and afterwards from Murano (not sure which maker or makers).

There is a thread on this topic (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,4829.0.html) about a weight looking similar - with a silver label "Edinburgh - International - Handmade - Italy" ... unfortunately the image is gone: if the moderators want it (to add it to the thread again) - let me know - I have copied it.

There also have been several on auction over the years (mostly ebay) - looking similar, with labels "Edinburgh - International - hand cut - imported", some sold in cylindrical cardboard boxes with "Edinburgh International" imprinted.

Conclusion: Murano weights have been sold by Edinburgh Crystal, but always (at least originally) marked as imported or Italian.
