Title: Displaying your collection
Post by: HeavyWeight on March 18, 2015, 12:20:44 AM
Hi,

How do you guys display your collections?

Do you just place them on shelves around the house? Or have you purchased a display cabinet? Or have you built something yourself?

Anyone have any images to share?

Thanks.

I have already given some info on that question in one of your earlier threads. :)

Also, there are other threads on the Board with the same query. For example:

A post from 2010 with a photo of one corner of my collection display. (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,33375.msg181057.html#msg181057)

And a thread from last year: How do you display your weights? (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,56969.msg322885.html#msg322885)

Yes you did mention it but I didn't really know whether to believe you. I do now. Do you never trip over them? I imagine that could end badly. If I did that in our house they'd end up being kicked around the floor, smashing into each other etc.

Thanks for the links particularly the one from the last year (sorry I will use the search function in future).

Don't worry about not using the Search. It takes a while to settle in and also to know the best search terms to use.

Hi HeavyWeight,

I did not post last year when this subject was debated as I was still trying to find a satisfactory way to display my weights.

However, I bought two secondhand cabinets on a famous auction site recently and here is the result. These are a cross between bookcases and display cabinets but they work really well for me/my (rather small) flat.

Hi HeavyWeight

A lot will depend on how many weights you have to display.

Ikea do good display cabinets at a cost of around £40 each these are around 66" tall
and a metal frame with glass all around and glass shelves about 14" square and you
can fit these cabinets with lights.

HOWEVER a word of warning, these glass shelves are NOT designed to take heavy
paperweights so you either need to limit the number per shelf or better, discard
the glass sheves and have ones made from plate glass. The cost of these new
shelves will probably double the cost of the cabinet!

I have the walls of my study lined with shelves made from 5" deep wide white
melamine from any DIY  warehouse - this gives me around 50 feet of shelf space
as I have 4 tiers of shelves with a seperation of around 6" between tiers. This
is enough in my case for around 260 weights. The only problem with shelves is
that the weights get far dustier than if in a cabinets so you will be constantly
dusting them !

I also have some old illuminated TAPLEY cabinets with plate glass shelves and
perspex risers so that you can see weights further back easily. These come up
quite often on E-bay just  search on Tapley furniture.

If you want to put weights on window cills that catch the sun be VERY VERY careful
as weights can easily focus the suns rays and there have been several reported
house fires resulting from this practice. Weights that are opaque are probably OK
ones that are mainy clear glass are definitely NOT OK ! BEWARE !!!

Best regards

Derek
