Title: Blue uneven bubble bowl ground pontil near blistering ? Nazeing or S&W ?
Post by: vatman175 on April 13, 2015, 12:06:30 PM
Hi Everybody,

As a newby ( and not a glass person) I am a not quite sure if anyone can help but after doing the usual trawl around the web and the library I am struggling to put a source and date to a piece I recently acquired. Has anybody any thoughts. It is a strong blue bowl, 10" diameter and 5" high also 3 1/2" at the base. Heavily irregularly bubbled with some nearly breaking the glass surface. Nice ground pontil .
Any comments greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Possibly Nazeing or Stevens & Williams?

I had a posy bowl in the same colour and bubbles, more common in a green colour - would guess at 50's-60's - maybe someone with more knowledge in this area will give a better idea!  :D

Hello and welcome to the board vatman175. :)

It does look very much like my Nazeing/Elwell jug and bowl discussed here:

Hopefully Nigel or Stephen may be able to confirm for you.

Thanks Guys,

I see what you mean, the item certainly looks quite similar in some respects. I suppose if I can confirm that the shape was produced by Nazeing then we can be pretty certain. It's tricky this glass business, isn't it, but I am beginning to love it. I am used to silver and jewellery where the hallmarks usually nail it down !!

Anyway , thanks again for your help.

Yes it is tricky, a bit like doing a jigsaw with no picture to guide you and you find the box has half the pieces for your puzzle and half someone else's! :)  It is addictive though...  I love these "blobby" pieces but I daren't keep adding to them - I'll need a bigger house!  :)

Meanwhile, you might like a browse through this site (quite a few pages - linked from the bottom of each) which shows a lot of the known Nazeing shapes.  http://www.ysartglass.com/Otherglass/Nazeing/NazeingG01.htm
