Title: Bubble flower handled paperweight help please.
Post by: brucebanner on April 23, 2015, 11:59:38 AM
I think this has some age, i do not think it's modern Chinese.  It has a large well polished pontil some  base wear and looks fairly well made.

Any thoughts welcome as i know nothing about paperweights.

4 3/4 inches in height and roughly 3 1/2 inches in diameter.

Regards Chris.

Hi Chris
I have seen weights with this design which come from India, a couple with labels on them, let's see what others think but my vote is Indian

Thanks Dave, were the bases concave and highly polished and what sort of age were they ?

Hi Chris,
These weights always seem to have three "flowers" in them and I am guessing they are around 1970's. Sorry I cannot remember what the base was like on those I saw but I have seen round and domed weights with this design in them.
It will be interesting to see if anyone agrees or disagrees with what I have said so I will keep an eye on this post

The standard Indian icepick flowers (i.e., no handle) I've see have matte bases and lesser quality clear glass. Are you talking specifically handled ones Dave?

Hi Christine,
This is the first version of this type of weight I have seen with a handle, or knob, the other types I have seen have been standard round types or domed. I am 100% sure they have been making these for years

Lots of companies make icepick flowers and this doesn't strike me as particularly "Indian" colours

There are four flowers in this one, there is a lot of dirt in the recesses around the top which also makes me think it has some age, although if it's from the 70's 40 years of dust might do that.

This may sound incredibly thick of me but why put a handle on it?.

I'm wondering now if it's a door stop.

I agree that this doesn't seem Indian.  The glass is too clear and my Indian weights have a matte finish on a very irregular base.
