Title: Large Bird
Post by: Pipsi on May 31, 2015, 05:53:16 PM
I recently got this rather large bird, the seller told me it is Murano and I don't see any reason to  question that but I was hoping to narrow it down a bit if poss. The colour changes depending on the light, in daylight it is red fading to orange yellow and clear but as the sun goes down it goes a lavender opal/opaque but with some red streaks still, I don't know if that sort of glass manufacture has a name? That might help me find a maker?

Thanks very much for any help :)

Hi and welcome. :)
I would suspect the kind of glass might be described as "alabastro", but Murano isn't my area, wait until somebody who knows more than I do about this sort of thing comes along - but that might be a word to start you off with.

Thanks Sue, I have looked at alabastro but it seems to be more consistently opaque?

Yes,  :-[ but it's all I could think of that looks anything like your photos! It has that purply sort of opaqueness.
But I've not seen alabastro that is as red as your bird. It tends to be mostly pink and white.
My curiosity is piqued, Pipsi.  :)

More opalescent than alabastro by the look of it - I would expect alabastro to be quite opaque.

The glass reminds me of this basket made by Fratelli Toso.

Thanks both :)

Fratelli Toso led me to Alberto Toso and this bird (1st pic) which is signed 'Toso Berto Murano 1966' and then I found this bird (pic 2) which has a cenedese label on it. There seems to have been a Tosi Berto at Cenedese in the 60s and as my bird appears to be the lovechild of these two I wondered if there might be a connection?

Mod: images removed as requested. Please do add links to a new reply below. Ta!

Sounds like a possibility.

Are those photos yours? If they are copied from elsewhere then there are copyright implications for the board and they would need to be removed.

Oops sorry, I didn't realise, they need to be removed but I can't see how to edit? Can a moderator remove them please or let me know how to edit?

Is it ok to put web links in?

I'll ask a moderator to remove them for you. (There is a "report to moderator" button at the bottom of every post.)
Links to the source are grand. No copyright problems then.

The head on the second one looks like the head on yours, and its an unusual styling of a bird head. :)

This could be useful https://sites.google.com/site/muranozoo/

Thanks everyone, sorry again about the pictures, here are the links:

[Mod: Enormous URL converted to a "text link"
Please also note that the link goes to a "Download Attachment" page and it is necessary to click the "here" word to view the image.
An alternative route is to go to the "Murano Zoo - Birds by Cenedese-3 (https://sites.google.com/site/muranozoo/birds-7/birds-by-cenedese-3)" page and view the "Swan or Crane" image from there.]

The second one was on the Murano Zoo site where I also came across the Cenedese bird signed by Alberto Tosi

Now, back to my research...... ;)

Hi Pipsi,

I have converted the very long URL in your post above to a "text link" - and also added extra info for viewers who are new to how the Murano Zoo pages operate. Sometimes a very long URL can cause problems with display on PCs or other devices.

Thanks, I'm not doing very well at this  :(

Don't worry about it. It's the sort of thing a Moderator will sort out if it looks like it needs it.  :)

It can be a steep learning curve, we all have to start somewhere...

I'd have to ask a moderator or somebody how to convert a huge link into a small one, I just haven't had the opportunity to show my ignorance yet.  ;)

Lol! I was just feeling sorry for myself and my ignorance - over it now  :D

I've not found out much about the Toso/Tosi conundrum, the more I dig the more I realise how little authenticated information is out there. The styling of my bird is very similar to Cenedese though so I'm looking for artists/manufacturers who have the same linear quality to their work if anyone has any pointers.

Thanks  :)

That's the joy of glass collecting. ;D
And why we're here.

We've not had any input from some of the serious Murano folk yet.
We don't give up here. Some identifications can take years, some just seconds.
