Hello all,
Try as I may I can't seem to find any info on this artist. At first glance one might take this weight as Caithness however the flat polished base is inscribed by one "C. Anton" titled "Moon Flower 1989". The craft is high quality and very well executed. Any additional information on this artists would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again,
Eric

she worked at Levay Glass in Ewardsville, IL at that time, Gary Levi owned Levay glass and used to do the gift shows in N.Y. & Chicago. Gary passed away a few years ago.
-
I believe, her full name was Susan Anton Carr.

There is a Blog page (written 2011) (http://kelekchens.com/2011/07/13/paperweights-american-contempory-artist-intaglio-levay/) discussing Levay Glass.
But please take note of the author's own caveats, and in particular: Much of this information has been digested by me and regurgitated with my own spin or take on the events. That is to say that the conclusions are my own.]Much of this information has been digested by me and regurgitated with my own spin or take on the events. Coincidence I guess but Moon Flower is a well know Caithness design and there was a glassmaker who worked there by the name of Calum Anton

Thanks for pointing this out, Dave - I should have checked that earlier >:(! You'll find even a photograph of him in the second issue of Reflections (1986) (http://www.scotlandsglass.co.uk/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=33:reflections-2-1986&catid=22:caithness-glass-co-ltd&Itemid=9#Ref02P10) ... scroll down a bit (second last for this set of images)
This weight definitely doesn't look like the famous Caithness Moonflower ;) ... but searching the internet there seems to have been an ebay auction "Caithness Floral Gold paperweight 1 of 1 Calum Anton". Can't find the auction itself any longer - but the description could fit.
-
Thanks Wuff
I thought the weight had a "Caithness" look about it too. Caithness had corporate membership of The Scottish Glass Association so all the staff were, therefore, members and put lots of weights in the SGA annual exhibition every year so maybe this was one of those

Another source to check is Andrew Nowson's Encyclopaedia of Caithness Glass Paperweights - where he states:
Calum Anton joined CG in Perth as a paperweight maker from Perthshire Paperweights around 1980. Calum is known to have designed at least two one-offs, New Horizons (1987, depicted in the book), and Maypole (1988).
-
Hmm.
Title of thread changed to show, "ID uncertain".
-
Thanks for all the input.
If we could track down an image of the underside of the one-offs it might give us some insight to how Calum Anton signed his name.
I've also been trying to track down contact information for Calum but have not had any success.

Hi Eric,
Caithness were bought by a company called Dartington Glass in 2006, they had to slim the company down to make it more efficient and profitable so most of the staff were made redundant, including Calum Anton, and had to find other work. I will ask a few people I know and if I can find where Calum is now I will let you know. A much smaller glassworks was set up in Crieff, next to the old Perthshire factory, in 2008 and is there today
As I mentioned previously, a lot of Caithness staff made one of a kind pieces for the Scottish Glass Society Annual Exhibition each year and these were only ever signed with their name, the title of the piece and usually the year. Hopefully one of our GMB colleagues may have one of Calum's signed weights for you to compare the signature
