Title: George Davidson pattern 51 vase in orange cloud glass.
Post by: brucebanner on July 02, 2015, 12:44:37 PM
A nice find today, i'm pretty sure these are pattern 51 but there seems to be hardly any orange cloud glass.

They differ in height and shape, one is 7 1/4 inches in height , 3 7/8th inches across the rim and 3 1/4 inches across the base.

The other is 7 3/8th inches in height, 4 inches across the rim and 3 3/8th inches across the base, so i'm guessing there from different moulds.

Has anyone seen these before in this colour?.

regards Chris.

They certainly look like Davidson pattern no. 51 vases, Chris.

The Davidson catalogues give a nominal height of 7¼ inches, and

gives the known cloud glass colours as amber, blue, purple, green, and orange

Fred.

Thanks for that Fred, the cloud glass website is very good. There was a stall at the recent Malvern fair full of cloud glass, non orange or red, looking at the few posts on here the orange went to Aus but there has only been one piece sold on Aus Ebay recently and a couple on our UK one. I have one of the red ones im sure not in this shape, it's  packed away or could have been recycled or charity shopped a few years ago.

I wonder why the amber was so popular, could it have been the price dependent on the colour to how much it cost or just the fashion at the time?.

Great find - especially when found in a pair. Apart from Ora (red), orange is the scarcest colour and I'm fortunate to have three pieces. I also saw that stall at Malvern and had a chat with the owner - hope you and your wife got back OK and Charlie didn't get bothered by too many dog-petters feeding her biscuits!

Three hours I walked around that place and I could not find anything apart from one piece of Isle of Wight glass, even Charlie had had enough. Hope you fared better than me. :-[

We spent about five hours there and I found a few pieces, but I find just mooching around very enjoyable. The number of stall holders were much reduced though, probably due to uncertainty with the weather. If it had been today...  :P

I'll never forget my first sight of orange cloud glass - it was on here, many years ago, Gareth (Morgan 48) had a round lamp in this colour. Glorious.
Orange is decidedly the very best colour of cloud glass - and the scarcest. Typical. Everything I like is always the hardest of stuff to find. ::)

Well done Chris - enjoy them. :)

Here is the Isle of wight piece Golden Peacock royale, i think it was worth the three hours let alone five, i can't understand why a lovely bright opaline uranium looking orange was not popular it's lovely in sunshine or low light it must have been a cost problem for pressed glass.

These are not uranium at all even with the cadmium glow?, it's just an optical  illusion.

Uranium is only orange in pottery glazes and cadmium and uranium are two different elements that give differing reactions under UV.
Here is a lot of info on orange cloud http://www.cloudglass.com/orange.htm

A black version of pattern 51 or dark purple in sunlight, same measurements as the orange.

Hi Chris

A really nice pair ...beautiful colour and trails ...... the reason for the slight difference in dimensions is that many of the Davidsons designs came out of the mould straight and then had the rims turned down by hand......on some of the bowls the difference can be quite dramatic..... Over the years I have seen them in every colour except topaz/briar ....imho the post war orange versions really did not work...no subtlety ...... cheers Gareth

Hi again Chris  .... Here is an example of what I was saying.... this is a bowl from the 1910 series but not one you will find in any of the catalogues....  from here it would have been shaped either flared, rolled over or cupped inwards..... excuse my descriptions but anno domini again has robbed me of my memory search and the correct terms.....they are in there somewhere but I'm sure you get the gist of what I'm rattling on about .....
