I have this 95mm high vase that has the malta cross impressed into the base......
The diameter of the stamp is 18mm, and has been impressed at the time of making with the base then flatted by cold working (with the 'Battuto effect')
The discoloration on the impression is probably caused by the gas torching of the base prior to the stamping.
Images posted here for reference.

I have recently noticed that the same Maltese cross prunt, the sort with the v-notch in the arms, is also used on Phoenician glass.
I have a Phoenician cylinder with a blob of glass on the front wiht this mark impressed into it.
It is not exclusive to MDG.

Sue, I presume you are talking about seal type prunts rather than a pontil stamp? Mdina also have this type prunt.
Those colours are MDG for sure :)

My post was general information only, Wolfie. :)
I'm saying the same prunt mark was used - or at least one that that was the same shape ;D at both Phoenician and MDG.
I'm not saying this bottle is not MDG, of course it is. :)
It's the same tool that is pushed into the bases of bits of MDG that is pushed into the blobs of glass put on the surface to make a blobby prunt mark.
The tool used at Mdina had a completely different shape on it, the cross consisting of 4 triangles, with spaces inbetween.
The tool used at MDG had a cross with v-notches in the arms, and a round shape in the centre.
The tool used at Phoenician had a cross with v-notches in the arms and a round shape in the centre.
I've only recently found an old bit of Phoenician and made this observation - when I was looking for something else.
Patrick showing the mark reminded me I needed to pass this snippet on.

Hi Sue,
Some great information there.......... Thanks for sharing.
-
The bottle I have with the impressed cross in the base is the same shape and size as yours.
-
Thanks Sue, thats great, can we see a pic of your bottle, is it the same colour?
-
Same Earthtones colourway, (it's been here a few times before ;) ) - but not as interesting as Patrick's - I like the abstract ladder-like formation in his; and the way it really looks even more three dimensional than it is.
I'll dig it out and photograph it, and the marked prunty blob on my bit of Phoenician...
No sun though for them to smile at though.

Let me save you some of the effort Sue, the base stamp on this one is not so well defined.

Thanks also ...... So mine is missing it's stopper ?
Regards,
Patrick.

My stopper doesn't fit any better than the Mdina stoppers do. I imagine they were possibly "optional".
