Title: Unusual Mdina Side Stripe Vase with 'pushed in' sides
Post by: Mosquito on July 28, 2015, 06:13:04 AM
Bought this lovely little vase recently. Looks like a regular side stripe vase except for the fact that the two flattish faces of the body have been pushed in -- in fact they meet in the middle -- something I've never seen before in this pattern. Anyway, I'd be interested to know if there are any others like it out there.

The vase measures approximately 13cm wide by 13cm tall. The base has been ground and polished and there's no mark.

Button-y rim, I would think it's experimental. It looks like it was done on purpose - sometimes bits of bodies meet in the middle when they're not supposed to. Very interesting, I've not seen one before.  ;D

Just remembered this piece and was browsing through threads on older Mdina when I saw this post from Flying Free (M) showing an early side stripe vase with cobalt: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,53678.0.html

That vase too also has the circular pinch marks on the sides and the internal 'bridge', supporting Sue's suggestion that it was done on purpose :)  Perhaps this was an early variant of the shape or an experiment which was not continued?

:) Just confirming that I agree.
Others have been accidental, but this one of yours is deliberate and for some unknown reason was not made in great numbers.

This Peter Layton vase has four stringy bits that join up in two places within the vase. Perhaps a little overkill but what a beautiful bit of glass.  ;D
