Title: Perthshire Peter McDougall Canes Help
Post by: cxgirl on July 30, 2015, 03:34:07 AM
Hi,
I have this large (3"H x 3 1/2"diameter) Perthshire paperweight, has Peter McDougall signature canes on the base. I'm trying to figure out when this was made. I have the complete guide to Perthshire paperweights but didn't see it in there.
Any help appreciated.

Hi Mary.  Perthshire made a lot of 'one off' and trial pieces.  The second Perthshire Book (The Complete Guide:The Final Years)  illustrates about 60, but there were many more.  I suspect this is another example.

Thank-you Alan!
Would these have been sold or given away? Also, is this shape considered a crown weight? I thought a crown weight was a ball shape but I see some this shape also called a crown, so I 'm not sure.

Hi

Sold...very sold! Not given away.  They were available in the factory shop, and not necessarily cheap.  I think your design is partly crown, but also a 'porthole' paperweight.

Thanks again Alan!  I had wondered if because they were trials or one-offs that they would be given away, glad I asked!
