Title: Big and small.
Post by: lyndhurst44 on June 24, 2006, 05:41:47 PM
HI,
I found these 2 vases today, one is a large 8.80" very heavy 2.4kg knobbly vase with a smooth pontil and the other a 4" very attractive mottled urn shaped vase measuring 4" tall and weighing 400gms. The pontil on this vase is part rough with a smoother outline. Both show signs of age with light base scratch marks. The first one was bought as being possibly Whitefriars but the height may be wrong.
Any ideas please?

Looking at the first piece (large blue vase), my first impression would be that it could possibly be one of Whitfriars' 'Knobbly' vases, Circa 1970 (Pattern No. 9609).

Can anyone confirm this?

My very large WF knobbly is (just measured it) 9" high, so I would guess yours is within the 'handmade' parameters Bryn.  Whopping great thing, huh?!

:D :D :D

According to Lesley Jackson (20th century FG), Whitefriars Knobblies were knobbled with an S-shaped tool. I do not know of any other knobblies knobbled with S-shaped tools, so I normally use this as corroborational evidence.
 Thank goodness I had to type that and not say it!

Hi Y'all,
Thanks all for your info most helpful as always and yes Max, it it really is a whopper, just imagine what a 10" looks like. No wonder it needs an S shape tool, it probably starts off straight
Would the colour be Kingfisher or ocean blue , do you think :?:
Cheers,

Pretty certain Kingfisher Bryn, although the colour on your pic isn't accurate (or is it??!!).  I'm not aware of Ocean Blue being a WF colour...there's Ocean Green though...but the knobblies were produced in Meadow Green, or Marine Streaky, not Ocean Green anyway.

To have a full answer, put your vase on www.whitefriars.com.  They're the folk to get full details from.  Unless Emmi wanders by this thread...

Hi Max,
Yes, I've checked the Whitefriars site and it is almost certainly Kingfisher blue, I think it's the very thickness of the glass that gives it a slightly deeper hue to the eye.
No ideas of the origen  on the small vase do you. The mottling is encased and gives out a kind of glow in good light. I really like it. Orange is not a favourite colour of mine especially in glass but this is a bit special.
Cheers,

I don't know on the smaller vase.  Someone's taken the trouble to grind and polish the pontil mark, so it's nicer quality than some, certainly.  Sorry.   :(

Hi Anne,
I think the Whitefriars vase and photo must be long gone, I may still have the photo of the smaller vase though, provided it's the one I'm thinking of. I'll check through my old albums.

Hi again Anne,
No sign of large vase but I've managed to find the photo's of the small vase and here they are. No doubt this vase is still in my possession, packed away somewhere in the attic methinks.
I remember it was a very chunky little cased piece. The base having a mixture of rough pontil with an unpolished surround.
