hi,
This glass dove has been standing in my sisters cabinet for years, she got it as a gift years ago and was told it was antique. Now she likes to get a second one, similar or exactly the same but we can't find them anywhere.
It is signed at the bottom but we can't make much of it. An internet search didn't learn us anything about it either.
Can anyone identify this glass dove and/or the artist? We live in Belgium/Europe btw, so I don't think it is of American making
thanks in advance :)

Hello and welcome. :)
I suspect the signature reads Venini, which would make it from Murano. It is a particularly beautiful piece of glass, so I would not be surprised by such a good name on it.
However, this isn't my area - there are other folk here who will be able to tell you much more than I can.

thanks for the reply Chopin,
I did look into Venini glass and although some of the birds are very similar, the signature is totally different and includes 'Murano' underneath the name...

What you need is Anita's site on glass birds.
Found the link for it! ;D

Thanks again Sue :)
Looked into that site and found nothing more....
Turns out now that this dove might have been a couple and that the other piece is still in the family. (I'll be calling everyone I know today!) So if it's a couple and the 2nd one is still around then I hope it has a label on it or more lines in the inscription that could tell more about it. (fingers crossed :) )
Never thought I would say it, but after a week of researching glass, I'm becoming pretty obsessed! LOL. but then again, so many beautiful pieces out there!

Could the signature read Vetri?

John
I'm not sure what it reads :)
Probably not Vetri, since Vetri Murano and Vetri d'Art are merely trademarks, not artists and they use labels on their glass, not engraving or stamps....
-
Very Venini ish in style , i have a couple packed away somewhere must dig them out , i believe some designers used unusual signatures , i have seen quite a few over the years , where is Anita ?
-
Well it sure looks like Vetri, the t is crossed and the i is dotted...

great find! thanks :)
My german is not very good but it seems it was put up for auction in 2011 and not sold. I wonder why they think this is Seguso...
I have pictures of it mailed to several glass museums, hopefully they can comfirm more about the dove.

An update on this dove (for anyone interested :) )
I live in Belgium so I contacted the Art and Design Museum in Ghent. They couldn't tell anything about the dove and referred me to Mr Marc Heiremans, who is supposed to be thé expert in Belgium when it comes to glass and he published 3 works about Vetri glass. I sent him pictures of the dove and received his reply today:
"I'm sorry but I can't help you either.
The dove certainly is NOT Seguso Vetro D'Arte, Archimede Seguso or Seguso Viro (3 related glass companies)
regards
Mark Heiremans"
So according to him, all auction housed that had put the name Seguso on it in the past where wrong.
Back to start I guess :)
All help or information is still appreciated though

Perhaps the paperweight board knew something.
Herr Auktionen had this bird also (I don't know how to minimize):
