Title: Mystery object Czech glass candle stick?. ID = Cenedese
Post by: brucebanner on August 25, 2015, 06:34:02 PM
I picked this up at a local boot sale a couple of weeks ago but the seller wanted £45 for it which  i thought a bit extreme, i really wanted it at the time and regretted not buying it, i then come across it for sale on Ebay, so i made a real cheeky offer which was accepted.

A blue base with a ruby centre and not Neodymium glass.

I thought 50's Czech glass candle stick when i picked it up first.

A lot of wear on the base flat foot, no UV glow and weigh's 600 grams so heavy for it's size.

It has been described as a Victorian gavel, stamp or toastmaster glass by the former owner.

What on earth is it, any thoughts?.

Regards Chris.

Aaaaargh, I have seen this somewhere recently, and I cannot think where. It wasn't in Jindrich's and Robert's book, I've just checked that.
I have been trawling images of Boda and Irene Harvik wine glasses, I suspect it appeared on one of those.
I'll have another go at finding it, but don't hold your breath. ;D

I did put an Ebay link on here in the cafe  part, before i made my cheeky offer, it was probably that.

I have seen it for sale a couple of times, that high price is memorable. After handling it my best guess is 50s or maybe 60s Murano, it 'felt' Seguso-ish to me. I thought perhaps a candlestick, I would have bitten the sellers hand off for a pair at that price... ;D

I don't think so. It was something that stuck out and "called out " to me from all the other images I was trawling.
I just can't remember which trawl I was on at the time.  I've been on both Czech glass and wine glass trawls.

I like it! :)

If you followed the link from the Cafe Sue you would have seen it.

Come to think of it, I remember the 'Victorian toastmaster' gibberish from the seller, each time I laughed and suggested 50s Murano but that did not go down very well...

I had the same response when i told him i thought it was Czech 50's, i'm really pleased with it though. I got it for a third the asking price in the link so it must have been in his hands for a while.

At least a year, possibly more. I tend to associate that pale blue and amethyst combo with Murano but no reason to rule out Czech. Perhaps it is more red than purple...

Probably why the base is so worn ;D.

Hello from a newbie.

Have a look here, please:

http://www.20thcenturyglass.com/glass_encyclopedia/murano_glass/cenedese_glass/cenedeseglass_home.htm

... see the 8th, 9th and 10th horizontal lines of photos?  They seem to be this object, although shaped a tiny bit differently, and they are said to be "Cenedese" candle holders.

Welcome to the forum.

You are spot on, Cenedese, good name too, one signed and another with a label so no doubt about the attribution!
