Title: Art deco Murano rosso e nero liqueur decanter, please help!
Post by: fionasn on November 06, 2015, 06:02:05 PM

Hello everyone,
I've found my way here via Bonham's and Chiswick auctions, neither of whom can identify the glass! I would really love to know who the maker is. The decanter and glasses shape seem fairly obviously art deco and I think the glass is nero e rosso, though it is actually a very deep aubergine rather than black. I think the marks underneath are a maker's mark but might be wrong; they are basically two long-ish lines meeting in the middle. There is also a line on the neck of the stopper which matches. I've emailed Pauly in Italy to ask for help as I saw an antique decanter on the internet that had obvious similarities though the glass was smoked, but not heard back yet. It was sold as Murano. The decanter is around 6-7 inches tall.
If anyone has any pointers at all, I'd be so grateful, I've become quite obsessed with it but am now stuck. Thankyou so much!
Best wishes,
Fiona

Welcome to the forum Fiona.

A photo of the mark would be good. I would not rule out Czechoslovakia, lovely set!

John

Hello John and Christine,
thanks so much for taking the time to reply! I started ploughing through pages on here after I posted my message and after seeing something about something or other which I now can't remember/work my way back to, I googled whatever the new reference point was and an identical style of objects came up diffferent pieces (cups and jug), but unmistakably the same style and colour. It is on ebay Italia and is attributed to Fratelli Toso o Venini, 1930. I am very wary of identifying anything solely via ebay as people get things wrong or hope for the best, but I'm going to do further searching on vetro nero pasta vitrea rossa (I think it's a glass paste made to look like ceramic which my very limited searching has told me was made by about 3 Venitian producers at the time.) BUT..now you've told me about the Czech connection, I'm going off searching in that direction too. I've just taken not-too-great pics of the mark underneath a glass and will post as soon as I can get them up, thankyou so much once again, very much appreciated,
Fiona.

That's the link to the similar stuff, and my pic of the underneath of a glass is attached. I'm not sure how to whittle down the Czech glass but I'll give it a go..thanks once again!
Best wishes,
Fiona

The marks on the stopper and bottle will be stoppering marks put on to make sure the correct stopper goes into the bottle as they probably had several being put together at the same time .
Welcome to the GMB Fiona .

Just a thought could they be Carlo Morretti? Has something of the look of his work.

The base mark is just a shear mark where the hot glass gob was manually cut off

Thank-you so much John and Ardy, apologies for not replying sooner, I only just received email updates. I'll be off to look at CM then! What an informative and enjoyable week I've had, I've learnt so much (well, comparatively speaking, for someone who knew nothing). Thanks again!
