Would like to know what this piece of glassware is or was used for.

Hi jeerweezer, welcome to the Board.
Please let us know the size of the item.

It's about 4"-5" tall. Base is 2 1/2" - 3" across and 1" - 1 1/2" thick

Hello Jeerweezer,
Welcome to the GMB, and thanks for an interesting question!
Does the top at the back look as if it could be hung on the wall? If so, I was wondering if it could be something used for holding Holy water, so that it could be used for blessing one's self? Likely for a Roman Catholic within their home. I'm sure they have a name, but it escapes me at the moment.
Kind wishes, Nigel

Nigel it's called a holy water stoup. But I wasn't sure this was deep enough to be one. However, perhaps so.

Nigel Yes it sorta does? The indention you see on the front is also on the back. Only I don't see how it would hold up since it doesn't go all the way thru. But I also was thinking along those lines. I thought it looked familiar and lord knows I've been in enough catholic churches.
Flying thanks for the name. I couldn't remember it either. Good place to explore.
Thank you both

I always referred to it as a "Holy Water Font".

It's got a bigger well than the one Michael's parents had hanging in their hall by the front door
(full of evidence that "life springs eternal" ;D- in the form of stringy bits of grey/black mould and slime :-X )

You know, the base of this thing, where i guess your thinking the water goes, is only about 1/2" deep?
To me it seems a little shallow to hold water. But maybe a candle or something
