Title: Caithness label on S&W's.
Post by: keith on January 24, 2016, 01:12:29 PM
Saw one of these yesterday with a Caithness label, the piece was quite cheap ( already have this one ) and the label was well stuck down, after looking up Caithness history I see they were bought up by Dartington in 2006, just wondered why they would stick a Caithness label on a Brierley / S&W's piece, seems a bit odd, ??? ??? ;D

 ;)
I would personally suspect the label was not applied in an official capacity.
This piece would surely predate Caithness - perhaps even the existence of Caithness?

I don't know the age of the S&W pieces, although I have a flared bowl myself.
Do you know the dates of these?

I was under the impression they were late 30s there are pictures in the RB'y S &W's archives but no date. There was a pair on a popular tv antiques programme, the dealer selling them said they were Whitefriars and the small bowl next to the vase was a lid making it a ginger jar, the fact it was a bowl and not a lid was obvious, ::) ;D ;D have yet to see one in blue.

Whew, I sort of suspected '30s.  (but then panicked about the '40s and '50s)

Definitely S & W's, bad 'bloom' on that wouldn't pay that much for it  ::) p.s. just seen a piece of 'Foundry' glass on your ebay site, first one I've seen in a while, the diagonal stripe vase.

It was part of  Royal Brierley / S & W's a small studio set up in the early 1980s, usually marked 'Foundry' '86 or '87, didn't last very long. ::) these pieces were originally called 'striped shirt and bow tie' but the name was changed to 'papillion'

I'm afraid I come to this discussion a little late, but thought I'd confirm one or two things.

The bubbled pieces have been mistaken as Whitefriars for as long as I've been collecting (40+ years). They are (as Has been said) S&W/RB, and, as far as I know, were made in the 30's and into the 50's. This means that they pre-date both Caithness and Dartington - so the label has definitely been fixed on by someone after leaving the factory.

I sure most (if not all) of you know that Dartington now own the Royal Brierley name, but just in case it's worth a mention - if only as a bit of irony!

The bubbled pieces that are ginger jars have been around from time to time since I started dealing back in June 1986; they always look as if the lid is an ash tray turned into a new use. I'm sure I have a threaded version in the store somewhere - I seem to recall that they have a much better 'fit'.

Cheers, Nigel
