I've not seen a metal-covered foot like this before. Does it indicate age of manufacture? or is the bowl on top a different vintage than the foot? The foot is engraved with those circles (sorry there's probably a better term for them) around it and appears to be quite heavy. I'm tempted to remove the metal to look underneath but it's in perfect condition and has no marks indicating it's been off and on before. About 10 cms tall.

It's a repair on the foot, it's a late Victorian storage jar or leech jar from around 1880, there always listed as leech jars but I think there for storage with maybe a cloth top tied around the rim.

thanks, Chris, do you have any images of a repair to a foot, of any glass item, like this?
-
I used to collect repaired glass and had about 100 odd bit's, most of my collection is in storage but these two are recent ones I have picked up. The pressed glass jug is a work of art repair wise, if you have ever tried to drill glass you would understand why.
There is a Victorian ale glass on here about a week ago with a wooden base, the majority of Victorians had nothing so anything would have been repaired to a point.
The one you have shown could be chipped around the rim, it might be decorative to stop the foot getting chipped, you would have to take the rim off to find out.

thank you for those, I think I'm going to have to remove the metal and have a look!

I got my OH to remove the metal but the 2 small chips revealed I'm not sure he didn't cause in the process. The exposed base has "72" on it. Does that hand-writing style reveal a date?
Looking at the fern engraving makes me wonder whether the simple shape of it (basically parellel lines) made it easier and therefore more common?
-
It looks like the foot has been cut down in size to hide the chips and the rim fitted, I would have left well alone myself, it looks like the rim will not go back on, if you look at others online the foot should be in proportion to the size of the body. I would think the writing is a measurement of some kind or order/stock number maybe.
I would have to hold the glass myself to tell, somethings are impossible from photographs.
I picked this one earlier this week and something looks wrong with it, the base is two well polished and the foot looks tiny when compared to the size of the jug it would be very unsteady when full.
-
Yes, the rim can't go back on, he's made a real dog's dinner of it! (I had asked him to do it carefully)
I agree yes, that foot doesn't seem to go with it. I think they were put together at some point. The bowl is different from others I have. The glass seems thicker and the engraving is better.
thanks Chris for your input

Are any of yours water stained, just out of interest.
-
no water staining on any of those fern-engraved ones, there are internal scratches on at least one
-
I think that's rather lovely and much nicer without it's metal attachment ( though I remove all metal lids from my glass even if they are jam pot lids as I don't like the look of them together).
Curious about the painted base of the foot with the number on. I wonder why that was done.
