Title: Red bottle/vase
Post by: Ben.unwin on February 22, 2016, 05:01:47 PM
I have this lovely ruby red vase/bottle.
Measures 9"tall and has a rim diameter of 4" has a UV reaction only on the rim and a sort of brunt on the side.
I thought it could be Holmegaard or something like that
Any idea on origin? Information welcome (:

Thanks in advance

The shape is 100 % Italian wine decanter which you usually find in clear or in blue. Never seen one in red before. Wine decanters are made in Rome, were made in Florence, in Pisa and Altare - but you can also find Maltese ones.  Due to
the clear prunt and the colour I think this may be Maltese . Someone will come along and contest or confirm - bless this board.

Just found my blue one which is Mdina, even if unsigned, and has a clear prunt with a Maltese cross in it. Mine has a smooth bottom, matt but not polished.

I think Mdina is a clear candidate, just a bit strange it's in red and with a uv reaction around the rim seems unusual to me..

Doesn't look like Mdina. That's not a Maltese cross

Not Mdina and not Maltese. Red was never used on its own and was a colour not introduced until a period later than most of the carafes. Mdina carafes are only found in teal and amethyst, with silver chloride decor.

steady blue, undecorated, maltese cross prunt. Red bottle with clear "PM" prunt, unidentified.

 ;)
Maybe the clear blue is an anomolous later one, or they'd briefly run out of silver chloride, or were economising on it? That does look to be the shade of blue Mark describes as being the later "jewell-like" deeper, colour.
;D In Mdina, there are plenty of anomolies.

The red in the bottle in question is the wrong shade. It's not a Maltese cross in the prunt.
I don't believe it's Mdina, not for one moment. :)

I'm sorry, I haven't any suggestions.

Hi Ben,

It looks very very similar, fairly identical, to one which I have seen before which had an original sticker for Italy Murano G A S.

It was the same colour too, and around 20cm tall.

Hopefully this info will help you with your search.

Best wishes, Michelle.

The orange-pink colour under UV is probably the presence of selenium.

Hi,

Perhaps there's a possibility that the red bottle vase is Polish late 1960s/1970s/ early 1980s?  Red was a popular colour in Polish glassmaking at the time, as was the use of prunts.  Also (though I really don't know if it has any significance), Polish glass of that period tends to have a crazy orange glow under black light.   (Two very poor photos as examples attached).

Anik :)

Hi,

I managed to find these pictures of the decanter I remembered seeing.

It looks pretty much identical to yours, only that the prunt mark is clearer (probably a hotter mould) and strangely seems somewhat inverted compared with yours.

I have also attached a clear picture of the label to hopefully solve the ID request.

Very best wishes, Michelle.

Ah, in that case, perhaps not Polish.  :)
