Title: Iridescent Vase Identification help - Loetz?
Post by: LauraG on March 31, 2016, 02:14:48 PM
Hi - Here are some pictures of an unusual Vase I have just bought. It measures 23cm high, is hand made and is very heavy. It has a low lustre iridescence all over, and bubbles and purple streaks within the glass. On the front is an applied medallion of a Face, I think it represents Pan. I have seen a picture of a Vase online with exactly the same applied medallion on the front, which was identified as Loetz and from their 'Columbia' range - however looking at other examples of that range, it is entirely different. Does anybody have any ideas who made this? Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the board :)

Your vase is really pretty. I can't help on a maker but hopefully someone will be along who can help you.
Just bumping it up to hope someone recognises it for you.
On first looking it reminds me of a Stevens and Williams Caerleon vase bizzarely, but that was just my first reaction - will need investigating a lot further  :)
How  much does it weigh and how much wear is there on the bottom?
Lovely photos btw

Hi flying free - Thanks for your message, yes this seems to be a bit of a mystery at the moment!

The Vase is very heavy, weighing 2.2kg, and there is some wear to the base where it would touch a surface, so there must be some age to it I think.

Just to add - I have now Googled Stevens & Williams Carleon and I think you're right flying free! I have seen a Vase/Jug with a Face Mask at the base of the handle; the photo is not terribly clear, but it looks very similar to my Mask, as far as I can see.

Great knowledge, thank you!

You will need to investigate that further though ;) there are lots of pieces around that look similar to each other.
The vase (for those of us imperially challenged) weighs just about 5lb I think ... which is quite heavy.
I'll grab my Caerleon vase down later and weigh it.

You will need to check things like the base finish etc. though.
Hopefully someone will be along who can confirm more details for you.

hmm, it does look remarkably like S&W but in a purple colourway. Pretty unusual. I'm not totally sure given the way the colours are swirled on,but the shape and the base seem ok.
Hopefully someone can confirm or deny more definitively.

Mine is 22cm tall and weighs 4lb or 1.8kg (my scales are a bit iffy but my vase is extraordinarily heavy for size).
I am pretty certain that what you have is a beautiful Stevens and Williams vase in Caerleon (purple colourway I guess).  I believe they came in a variety of colours :)
I'd go so far as to say it definitely is.
The shape is very Stevens and Williams, the way the colour is laid on and the bubbles is identical to mine (apart from the streaks on yours) and the lustre iridescence is perfect for Caerleon.
The base of mine also has a snapped off pontil mark the same as yours.

A beautiful and unusual find.
