Title: Mystery pontil mark on perfume bottle
Post by: Penelope12 on April 25, 2016, 07:18:18 AM
Hi all,
I recently purchased this as an Isle of Wight glass perfume bottle from the 1970's. It has a very unusual pontil mark which is a complete mystery to me. Any help with identifying it would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the message board.

A picture of the bottle would be useful too.

Hi John,

Thank you for your reply, here are some more photos, I've been trying to get the file sizes down. There is quite a lot of wear to the base, so I would say it is from the early 70's.

Penny.

Hi and welcome.  :)
Isle of Wight Studio Glass (now closed, but repoened again under the direction of Tim and at a different location) is only one of the studios that operate on the Isle of Wight. This bottle does not really look like their work, but sorry, I can't help with whose work it is either.

Sue  -  would the flame pontil have been on all of their pieces during the '70s, or only some.                  My first thought when I first saw the mark on this perfume bottle was that it appeared to be simply a slightly fire polish pontil scar - rather than a particular mark.

forgive my ignorance if I have this wrong  -  studio glass not really me area.

The flame prunt mark over the pontil scar was used from late '73 onwards, but was being phased out by '78, and stopped completely in '79.  :)

Before '73, there was either the coach-bolt prunt or a broken pontil scar. But this Perfume Bottle is not consistent with the early work at IoWSG.

A summary of pontil marks on IOWSG pieces is here: http://iowstudioglass.wikidot.com/labels (http://iowstudioglass.wikidot.com/labels)

I agree with Sue that this PB is not likely to be by Isle of Wight Studio Glass, but could be one of the other Island studios. It is hard to tell.

Thank you for your thoughts, it has got me completely baffled. If I could work out what was imprinted on the base it would be a big help, but it just looks like a big stick or tower surrounded by waves to me. I wondered if it could be a trial piece because the strapping is very fine and brittle and the base is a bit wobbly. The colours are consistant with phoenician glass, but their bases are usually ground, polished and signed.

Thanks again for your help Penny
