Post by: djkglass on May 13, 2016, 08:12:39 PM
Hi,

Any ideas please, thought i had seen the bird/beak vase in a book but can't place it. Also the goblet is small and looks a bit IOWish but the base looks wrong.

Many thanks for any replies

Can you repost the goblet into a separate topic please, as having multiple unrelated items in the same topic causes us problems later.

Your vase is most likely a peanut dispenser for parties, they were very popular in the 1970s I seem to recall!

Peanut dispenser is correct, but it is very recent. Very very recent.

I've just found the beaked bird - the original design that is -  in one of the Miller's guides.                          Vera Liskova (1924 1985) was herself presumably Czechoslovakian, and designed a variety of stylized bird shapes - this particular variation was described originally as a pourer  -  but for what I've no idea  -  and in it's original form was give the addition of legs and feet.                Height of this form was originally c. 9.75 cms.

The artist was renowned for these lampworked abstract animals and birds produced in borosilicate glass  -  apparently some of the larger abstract shapes have fetched thousands of pounds!

Well found Paul, and yes Vera was Czech.  That ties in nicely with the info in my earlier link in reply #3. :)

Not sure if it is the Miller’s book that Paul refers to, but in Miller’s Collectables Handbook there is a photo on page 218 of the Vera Liskova beaked bird vase pourer that looks like the one in this topic. There is also a photo next to it of the similar design stylised owl cylindrical jug/pourer also by Vera Liskova.

I see there are at least two sources for the beaked bird pourers ‘inspired by Vera Liskova’ such as Taiwan and Glass by David but is anyone aware of similar copies of the owl design?
