Title: Please help to ID millefiori paperweight

Good afternoon,
Just yesterday I have purchased a beautiful millefiori glass paperweight at my local auction. It was described as "large late 19th century domed paperweight". I would like to know if it really is so old and who could it be made by. There are no marks or any other inscriptions in it. Paperweight measures 2.5"/6.5cm high, ~11cm/ just over 4" at it`s widest. It weighs 1057gr.

Hi Deimante, welcome to the GMB.

Your post has been moved to the Paperweights forum as that is where we like to keep discussion on (most) paperweights.

The weight, at 2.5 inch diameter is not really "large" but is of a good size. It is also not 19th century, but probably mid-to-later 20th century and made in Murano. Likely to have been made by the Fratelli Toso company, where the canes were typically very "coggy" in appearance.

I am sure somebody else will add a comment if they think I have either the date or company wrong (Murano weights like this were also made in the earlier parts of the 20th century.)

To tell you the truth I am just a little bit dissapointed with the auction house not quite doing their research and giving out slightly misleading information...however with that said, I do love my paperweight and I do think it is rather unusual.                                              Once again thanks a lot Kevin. Hi Deimante and welcome.

I agree with Kevin on origin.  I suspect it is 1930 - 1950 period though: there is a black and white image of a fairly similar Murano piece in a book written in 1939.  As for the capacity of auction houses to correctly identify and attribute paperweights, do not hold high expectations: it is sometimes a case of 'spot the deliberate accuracy'!
