Title: Davidson or Bernsdorf? - ID = Ankerglas Bernsdorf "Evelyn"
Post by: B & M on July 12, 2006, 07:51:37 PM
Hello, I just bought this vase today; http://i1.tinypic.com/1zqc0o4.jpg (Mod: image gone, see further down the topic for new pics)
from memory I thought it was a Davidson 278, however, it is in a bright green Uranium glass, not a colour I associate with Davidson.

Having looked through Pamela's site I found this vase, attributed to Bernsdorf (item 03035). The design certainly appears to match my piece, this, combined with the unusual colour of my vase convinces me that it is a Bernsdorf example.

Unfortunately I don't have a Davidson 278 to compare with. Does anybody out there have a picture of a Davidson 278 to compare the designs? I'm interested to know if they are identical or whether there are differences. Looking again, I dont remember the vertical elements in the band of decoration in the Davidson vase but not having seen one for a while I cannot be sure.

Vase measures approx. 7.5 inches high

Thanks

Steven

Take look at Chris & Val Cloud Glass site under Davidson cloud glass, Vases there are photos of some 278, this may help you. Best of luck a nice piece, if it is looking for a good home I collect Davidson!!!!

Thanks Tony,

Sorry to disappoint you, vase isn't for sale yet, but of course I will let you know if I decide to part with it in future.

I have had a look at Chris & Val's excellent site, from what I can make out, the design is slightly different. My vase has vertical grooves where the panels meet on the body of the vase, these seem absent on the vases shown. Likewise the band of decoration on the Davidson example appears to consist of just diagonal elements making a band of repeating 'X' shapes, whereas my vase has vertical lines between the 'x's.

It seems to be another case of two glassworks producing very similar patterns: I wonder which came first?

Steven, your Tinypic has vanished - do you still have a copy of the pic please, and if so could you add it back onto the topic for us? :)

Thanks Steven, much appreciated.

Did you manage to find a Davidson 278 to compare it with? There is a better photo of the 278 in Chris' book which shows the pattern a little clearer - it doesn't have the same verticals between the X's as yours has.

P.S. Not sure what your characters before the smiley mean as my pc just showed them as little unrecognised character blocks so I guess I don't have the right font installed.    :-[

Pamela, I guessed it'd be Chinese but I didn't know what it said.  :kissy:

We´ve got a picture of a Davidson to compare with here:
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,28650.0.html

Rule of thumb:
2 X per panel = Davidson
1 X per panel = Bernsdorf  ;D

Steven, Pamela, et al — Paul S has fitted out Janet's 278 / Evelyn collection with the correct flower holder for a Davidson 278, so they are all now legit, no M&Ms.   It only took about 12 years.

Here they are:
