Title: Caithness Alexandrite Roe Deer Vase
Post by: chilternhills on June 24, 2016, 11:00:53 PM
I have a Caithness alexandrite stag vase, just like this one:

http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/96684-caithness-glass--neodymium-alexandrite (http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/96684-caithness-glass--neodymium-alexandrite)

On the base is inscribed "ROE DEER" and "SM". Does anyone know what SM stands for? I can't find anything on the web. Any other info is also appreciated. Thanks.

Anton

very nice piece ............   I wonder why put Roe Deer when the engraving shows a stag??                  Are we sure this is an S?
The initials aren't particularly legible, although the M is probably not open to interpretation, but assuming the initials on your piece are identical to the one in your link, do you think there's any possibility the first letter might be I.
My reason for this suggestion is that one of the engravers/sandblasters listed in Mark Hill's book is an Irene McCoughie.                 I'm probably wrong - but just a thought.

Could be wrong, but I think the Board has an issue with showing material from other sources without permission  -  is there some reason you're not able to attach pix of your vase?

Ref. 'Caithness Glass - Loch, Heather & Peat'  -  Mark Hill  -  2011.

Here are the pictures. The delay was caused by pics on phone....can't find my cable to transfer them to my laptop....  :(

The sig says SM.

oh deer, did I get it wrong ;)  -  thanks for the correction  -  probably carried away by the use of the word stag.            Caithness did actually do a stag on a straight vase (pattern No. CT 738) but that beast does have substantially bigger antlers than this one.

Some of these Dremeled initials can be difficult to decipher at times  -  I think the one in the link is difficult but could be an I, and not too certain even about the op's piece now :-\

Could it be JM for John MacDonald - see http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,50354.msg284526.html#msg284526

I'd decided it reads JM before I read Wuff's post, if that helps at all.  :)

Now that I look at it again it looks more like JM. John MacDonald it is then. Thanks for all your help.
