Title: Sowerby Spill Vase Pattern 1295 ?
Post by: mhgcgolfclub on July 03, 2016, 01:12:22 PM
Fred

Looks like the same vase as your gallery picture of 1295 , but with a smooth body . Also looks to be the same registration.

This one was a car boot find this morning.

Height 3.75"

Nice find, Roy – not a common pattern.

For permanent reference, here is the Sowerby pattern 1295 vase as it appears on page 5 of their pattern book IX (1882). You will notice that the sides are shown as plain slabs, just like yours, rather than the vertically-ribbed sides of the example in the Glass Queries Gallery Sowerby album.

The pattern is from Sowerby RD 319619, registered on 22 March 1878 - Parcel 8,  the only Sowerby design registered on that date.

as you'd expect, the original design was for the shape only, and as you can see in the attached drawing, Sowerby's own description says 'vase'  -  no mention of the word spill.
I should know, but can't now recall  -  are there factory drawings that actually use the word spill  -  the assumption that this one was for spills appears to have been a description added later.

If you look in Slack, for example, those pieces he describes as spill vases are generally taller and narrower - which is what you'd expect bearing in mind the length of spills.
I say this remembering childhood Christmases when we used to make a spill holder for Grandfather, and the basic tubular shape was created from the cardboard inner tube from a toilet roll, then covering it with some brightly coloured crepe paper............    I have a feeling we had to buy the spills.

In view of the height of this one, is it more likely to have been some form of posy vase rather than a spill holder?

Thank you for showing the design representation, Paul.

Both Thompson and Cottle simply describe the item as a 'vase' - the use was presumably at the behest of the owner.
