Title: Green Glass Barrel Decanter and Glasses
Post by: Alsretro on July 31, 2016, 11:41:17 AM
I'm guessing this is for some sort of spirit, maybe Calvados or Absinthe and would have originally had a cork to fit in the top. The top section lifts off with six small glasses in a fitted tin holder that sits in the glass base. The green glass is rough surfaced, probably rolled in chips of glass (?frit) with the inside surface smooth. The glass doesn't react to UV light. This measures 9ins tall, 5 3/8ins at its widest part and weighs 1.18kg. The tap and banding are white metal. Any information on age and possible maker would be appreciated. Many thanks.

 :)
My guts think it looks French, but I don't know why.
Given you have mentioned both Calvados and Absinthe, do your guts suspect French too?

Maybe German or Bohemian schnapps barrel and glasses?
The Bohemians made lots of sets of egg shaped 'bar' sets with the glasses inside  :-\

Thanks m
More searching and found one similar but different :D in pink glass. The shot glasses are not in the base but hang on the side. One of its metal bands is marked Czechoslovakia. The Etsy one has a matching glass stopper https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/171952276/czechoslovakia-antique-glass-barrel-keg?ref=shop_home_active_17 (https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/171952276/czechoslovakia-antique-glass-barrel-keg?ref=shop_home_active_17)

There are thousands of variations on this theme, all from Germany, Austria or Bohemia. They occur in France as well, in which case they were usually made by Portieux - for the German market.  Attribution is almost impossible. Well okay then, totally impossible.

Thanks Ivo and I guess it's possible just the metal band was made in Czechoslovakia and stamped as such but...
And the Etsy seller, Suzanne Dewar (CornermouseHouse) has kindly agreed that I can use her text and images here to confirm the information.
So "Here's a vintage Czech Glass Barrel Set in frosted pink glass. It has three metal bands, one of which has rings for holding 6 small shot glasses. It's marked on one of the bands, 'Czechoslovakia'. ... Neck and stopper are both ground. Barrel including stopper measures 7" tall. ... Spigot is fitted onto a cork."
There are differences from mine but overall, very similar with the same, neck and base finish.
