Title: Paperweight I/D leaf and indentations
Post by: malcmat on August 05, 2016, 11:46:13 AM
No luck with trying to I/D this P/W so thought it needed posting.
8cm dia x 5.7cm tall and 671gr in weight.
It has 14 individual leafs ground into the side of the weight and the concave top has a circular pattern of indentations. The base is also concave, ground and polished with an amber flame mark indented in it. There is a diamond etched signature which is minute in size and reads A. Laing 1995. Not sure if its the artists name or a buyers name. ?
Any help is appreciated
Many thanks
Malcolm

It reads A Laing 1995 (?) and I would think that was the artist.

I'm presuming it's engraved.  I've looked through the few glass books I have on contemporary British glass and no name comes up.
You could try looking into Australian or American as well.
Otherwise it might be someone who has since married and changed surnames perhaps?

you're welcome, sorry the books didn't turn up anything.
I absolutely love this piece - it's a fabulous design.
I wonder... have you sent a pic to Caithness glass if that is possible?

I had a lilac glass paperweight with teeth and a slogan engraved onto it one - really fab.
I suspect it originated at Caithness.
I'll try and find a link to it.

oh, new avenues to explore then.
I've looked on the glass engravers site and couldn't see the name.

It's a fab piece of sculpture.

I have been waiting for someone to say, "Yeah , I know this one, it's ... ...".

But clearly not the case. Searching for "A. Laing" does not come up with much other than "Laing Art Glass" and there seems to be no detail beyond that.

I guess the pattern ("leafs and indentations") is actually a sunflower. And the fiery part may be a reference to sun rays. Are they painted on or worked into the glass in some way?

A signature around the lower parts just above the edge can be an indicator of American work.

Hi kevin, the indented base has been painted that yellow/orange colour and I am still checking the American / Australian references .
