Hi
I have just purchased this paperweight which is 6.2cm high, 7.5cm diameter and has a shallow polished pontil mark on the base and some wear on the base as well. Originally I thought that this might be a Perthshire PP19 scrambled but there is no date or P cane that I can see. Can anyone help ?
Thanks
Rob

Hi Rob,
This is a classic period Clichy scrambled weight.

Wow really ? Do you mean 19th century ? :) any idea on a parameter of value ? it has a couple of minor scuffs. Thanks.

Hi Rob, nice weight. Generally, most folk on the Board do not discuss values but some members are happy to discuss such things via email etc.
However, at 3 inch diameter and if it is good condition, it should have an "auction estimate" of, at least, the mid- to high hundreds ($ or £).
What makes Clichy weights of more worth to collectors are things like: Presence of a "Clichy" signature or partial signature such as "C" on its own, or as part of a complex cane (but not an apparent "C" formed by slippage of the cane detail). Also, Rose canes are highly regarded, but fairly common. If there are many Rose canes, that helps to raise interest. And note that Rose canes (and proper "C" canes) can sometimes be found as very small elements of other canes.

Ok many thanks, it does have a couple of dinks so I would imagine that would affect value. Its condition is really good otherwise, probably been polished at some point.
