Title: Bottle/decanter with ship etching
Post by: Ben.unwin on August 23, 2016, 04:39:40 PM
Bought this lovely piece of glass measuring 20cm tall.
Polished pontil base with a decoration of a ship.
I thought it could of been Scandinavian as they often use viking ships as decoration. But the ship has a crows nest and 3 sails which isn't in the shape of the typical longships they used.
On the back there is a castle like building as well as the letters PH at the bottom.
Any thoughts are welcome :)

Very much in the Swedish / Danish tradition - it would have been stoppered with a cork with a pierced coin on top fixed by a splint. I'm sure you will find brennvinflaske of this type on google image from Skruff and from Holmegaard.

Saying which, I had a similar one which turned out to be Portugese.... another alley to explore.

I've had a few Christmas decanters by holmegaard before and you are correct in saying they have the Cork stoppers.
This however has a ground neck suggesting a matching glass stopper  ??? ???

The Holmegaard mouth-blown versions of these decanters (kantineflasker, in Danish) - as opposed to the later auto-blown Christmas bottles - didn't have flared rims (at least on the ones I've seen) and tended not to be half-post.
