Hi,
David at the Chance Glass website doesn't think this is Chance as it is 14.25" x 5.75", appears to have the design on a foil-backed medium applied to the bottom and with a reddish-brown coating on the bottom.
Does anyone know who might have made it?

Cat, can you do a picture of the back please and one showing a closeup of the edge? Could you also make the pics in GlassGallery a little larger? As long as they're less than 200 kb they're OK but yours are a little too small to be able to see detail too well.

If it's leather on the back, it could be Pigskin glass:

Max, that's just what I was thinking as well. :) Pics of the back and edge would help confirm it.

Hi,
I've posted the pics you wanted, although it's not very easy to see the detail. I'm not sure at all that this would be a leather back. Also, having looked at as much of the pigskin glass as I can find online, this seems to be too "crisp"..............the other bits seem less defined...........

side (I picked an area where the backing had been chipped - the gold foil is still attached to the glass)

:D :D :D
From the chipped bit, it could be enamelled copper. I can't feel it or turn it in the light, but the surface looks "pitted" and the colour of copper that's been heated, so if the enamel chips off, you get the heat pitted purply-reddy effect. That would also explain the brightness and crispness.

I can see why it might appear to be copper, but it's definitely glass..............with a design on gold foil applied to the back and it has the coating on the back that looks like fibres under the magnifying glass - presumably there to protect the foil.
The more I've had this around the more "familiar" it's getting.............I vaguely remember something like it from childhood..........so we may be looking at 30-40 years ago
Thanks

Where you have the existing chip in the backing, chip out a tiny piece with a needle, if it is fibrous = leather, if crumbly then = some enamel type or other heat fusing material.

Any sign of a wall hanging on the back as there was a firm in Italy making wall plaques in a similar shape in the 1970's in a wide variety of designs. When I had the auction we had a couple through with the Made in Italy labels still on them but no company name.

Hi Paul - No - nothing like that. Thanks Cat

While on holiday in Cornwall last week, I came across two pieces of slumped glass at a boot sale with brightly coloured abstract patterns and leather backing AND labels, which said Mayfair Glass, Manitoba, Canada and also that they were leather backed.
