Title: Sowerby pattern 1337 basket - design registration date and/or number, please?
Post by: agincourt17 on October 12, 2016, 08:14:11 PM
An uncommon Sowerby pattern 1337 basket shown on page 2 of their pattern book XI of 1885. (Permission for the re-use of these images on the GMB granted by Andrew Wilkin).

The quatrefoil basket 'body' bears the impressed peacock head trademark and an indistinct diamond registry date mark.

From the pattern number and the style, I imagine that the design was probably registered some time in mid- to late 1878. Does anyone have a similar basket bearing a clear date mark, please, so that I can trace the corresponding RD number?

Fred.

Fred, I'm fairly sure it's Rd. 315673 from 29th October 1877  -  there were eleven on that date, but the handle on this one is the give-away.             I'll do the photos tomorrow, and will also look for the honey/marmalade you posted on Monday.

see what you think  -  I'm fairly certain this is a match for Rd. 315673  -  it's a shame that the factory didn't provided the image in plan form - would have made recognition beyond doubt, but as I say the handle is probably the real clue.

Thank you, Paul. I'm sure your ID is spot on.

I will add the details to the Sowerby Pattern album and the GMB RD database shortly.
