Title: Powder Jar 'B' mark
Post by: Simba on October 16, 2016, 04:42:16 PM
Please can anyone help ID this powder jar, the metal appears to have been silver plated at one time. On the base is a moulded letter 'B'. the jar is 3 inches wide and 3 inches high.

hi Angela  ........   from what little I know, most British made silver plated metalwork is marked EPNS or EP perhaps  -  I take it this one is unmarked.                  How about the rather obvioius  -  Baccarat? ;D

The glass is very similar to the  Baccarat Bamboo Tors pattern as seen in the 1916 catalogue - page 043 has a lidded powder box with a similar metal part...  the one illustrated is the Rose teinte version not clear like yours but we do know the pattern was made in clear also, but.... the lid on the Baccarat one appears to be flat not patterned like yours, and the intro page of the catalogue states that each piece carries the usual Baccarat stamp (http://www.yobunny.org.uk/glassgallery/displayimage.php?pos=-23300) displayed on the same page (which isn't a B).

All products in our manufacturing carry a label, a stampille or punching representing the above-against mark.

So I suspect not Baccarat but possibly a lookalike for what was a popular pattern at the time...

Thanks both for your reply, no the silver plated bit is not marked. It is very similar to the Baccarat pieces having had a browse of them online but previous Baccarat pieces I have had had polished bases which this doesn't so I had discounted that ...but unable to find another maker who uses a capital letter B as their mark. Oh well another to go on the mystery shelf  :)
