Title: Function of this carafe?
Post by: SNJ on November 23, 2016, 03:21:12 PM
Would someone care to offer suggestions as to the function of this, please? Water, wine, vinegar or non-culinary? It has absolutely no wear inside the neck so no stopper, faceted neck and large polished pontil scar, lots of wear to foot ring. Height 5¼" / 13.5cm.

Possibly an individual decanter (there are such things) or a tumble up missing a glass

had this seen the use of alcohol or vinegar (evidence of stopper not apparent if it had been vinegar), then my opinion is there would be some cloudiness since both contain very mild acidic contents.     I'd go with the idea of an individual carafe for water.                  Of course, it may have been intended for wine, and simply never saw service  -  anyway it will make a very useable stem vase, now ;)

The whole area of tumble up - carafe - water bottle - individual decanter etc. etc., is very varied as you can see from a peep in S. & F. - so probably impossible to say with certainty, now, what the original use of this one was.
