Title: Green cut to clear decanter - Bohemian?

I have just bought this pretty green cut to clear decanter and I am trying to find out about it. I am thinking that with the grapes as part of the cut pattern, it was intended for wine. (have just realised I haven't photographed the grapes side, but you can just see a bunch of grapes on the side of the decanter)

There is an engraved W or M on the bottom of the stopper. Also the same mark is I think on the base (see it on left of the picture of the base). Am I right in thinking it may be Bohemian? Does anyone know what the mark may mean? Would it have been the person who cut it?

Also, would it be made of crystal, or just glass? Is there a way of knowing?

I love researching a new find!

The W is just to match stopper to bottle. Bohemian/Czech is probably about right. I would guess it was not lead crystal, as the green is flashed rather than cased (it's a very thin layer), so lower end of the market.

OK, that is in accordance with how I 'feel' about it. Still a pretty and useful thing for only £5 paid. And all adding to my glass knowledge!

Hi Kate  -  purely out of curiosity, how tall is this piece?

Hello Paul, it's 11" high including the stopper, and it also measures 11" around the body, so a normal sized decanter.

For some reason the main shot of it makes it look quite small! Is that why you were asking?

thanks Kate  -  yes, I was unsure as to size, and from where I was standing did wonder if this might have been much smaller, and consequently could have been for cologne or similar, or perhaps liqueur.            It's unusual for the 'matching No.' to be a letter  -  they are numbers, usually.
Anyway, so guess you've now read up on flashing, and nominate you as the Board's expert in that area.  ;)
