Title: Ruby cut to clear vase - British or Bohemian?
Post by: madhatterrus on January 24, 2017, 05:38:51 PM
Hi,

I have this ruby cut to clear vase and am just wondering if it can be British? It's 10" tall.
Any ideas please?

Thanks!

I think it is probably Czech.
It is remarkably similar shape to a cased in opaline and cut to clear Kralik vase I own.

I'll have a look at the sheet I was sent on the Kralik vase and see if your pattern is on there.

It is not on the sheet and I think the shape is slightly wrong I'm afraid.
The Kralik shape I'm thinking of is slightly wider at the base than yours, so it appears that the sides curve out from the top and then almost go straight down to the base.
I still think yours is likely Czech rather than English though. The other option worth exploring might be Ajka.

I guess you're talking about the shape that you can find partially wheel cut and partially acid cut, M?
Anyway, I think you're right, this vase being Czech rather than anything else.

Same vase in the link in blue.

Anne this is my vase - it's thick opaline cased over clear and is very deep cutting.

Mine appears on the Kralik page of vases with various designs on them, some cameo some cut to clear iirc (certainly I have seen my vase shape in cameo as well as my cut to clear)

There is a difference in the shape between mine and the op's - hopefully the link shows the shape of mine in comparison.

Yes it does and yes, it is the shape I was thinking of.
Interesting catalogue page posted by Mike btw.

quote from Anne Tique .............    "find partially wheel cut and partially acid cut"  ..    forgive my ignorance Anne, on a subject about which you know vastly more than me but......    what part of the decoration on this ruby vase are you referring to as 'acid cut' :) .......   I had assumed the adornment here was entirely cut ?

Sorry, I had to edit this message as I misread your question Paul.

I was just talking about the shape and not the technique of the vase in the other thread.

Mod: Link removed as content changed to inappropriate site

Of course both vases in question are wheel cut.

Paul apologies, it's one of those cases where Anne and I both 'knew' which vases we were referring to, which were the ones Anne has just linked to in the Passau.  We just didn't make that clear to anyone else reading :)

Anne I do wonder if there any of this type of cut to clear coming out of Slovenia?

I did find another Czech Crystal maker that cuts to clear but I can't remember what thread I linked that on.  It must have been a thread mentioning Ajka as that is how I'd have found the other maker.

Many thanks to all contributors! I would have never found all that info myself, much appreciated. Flying Free, mine is in fact different in shape to your Kralik, top diameter is 7.5cm, bottom 8cm.
Anne, thank you for the link, I was surprised to see the price TBH :) I looked on eBay before posting but didn't see that one as I was looking for ruby glass only.
I was hoping for it to be British but it's interesting to know more about it anyway :)
