Not sure if I should post this here or in American glass but as he resides in Scotland maybe this is ok, 5 inches tall marked Steuben to the base, dated 1992 and an absolute porker to photograph but I've tried ::) ;D ;D ( another really cheap find ! ) ;D ;D

You lucky thing you - one of the very top names in stipple engraving. 8) ;D 8)
Now, you just need a proper light box in which to display it. That is the only way you can see the work properly.
The 3 little houses depicted are called But'n'bens. (or But and Bens).
Small two roomed houses, one room being kept for the kitchen dining and sitting room - all the general living stuff, that room is the Ben.
The other room was kept neat and tidy, like the parlour, and was mostly unused except when the minister came to call. That room is the But.
Sometimes there is an upper floor, with 2 bedooms, as in the middle house.
When somebody knocked at the door, the call was;
"If it's ayebody, tak' them But, if it's naebody, bring them Ben."
Translation;
"If it's somebody important, take them to the posh room,
if it's just a friend or family, bring them through to the living quarters."
Basically, Ben means here, But means there.

Thanks Sue, so this piece needs to be in the 'But' ;D ;D
-
Absolutely, pride of place, in the centre of the mantlepiece. ;D
-
Swap for a rare piece of RB? when i find it?
-
I shall have to think about that, it's my first piece of Steuben so unless you come up with something incredible it will be a 'keeper' ;D ;D
-
:o
The Steuben is merely the blank supporting the true treasure.
My gob is smacked and my flabber ghasted at such a find, Keith. Honestly. I'm thrilled for you.
It reminds me of the time I found my Alison Kinnaird. I know what it's like to find some cold-worked glass executed by the very best.
I've just done a wee search. James Denison-Pender is also a children's author and he's on twits, if you wanted to contact him.
Some info about him and piccies here.

Thanks Sue, saw that site this morning, a great artist, the nearest I can think of is Sir Laurence Whistler, '20th C.B.Glass ' page 258, yes I agree the bowl is quite plain it's the work on it that is amazing. ;D ;D
-
Absolutely, Denison-Pender is on a par with Whistler.
I'm still thrilled for you! ;D
-
That is delightful Keith. Great find.

Thanks both, the more I look at this the more I see, really difficult to get a good shot but look at the detail, the sky and sea are fantastic :o ;D ;D

You're a lucky chap Keith. I bought a piece of his work last year, but close to paid retail IMHO. His work is definately on a par with Lawrence, and even Simon Whistler, however not as yet as frighteningly expensive.
As was said by Sue, it is 'just' the blank that Steuben supplied; they supply to many engravers because of the purity of their glass - Alison Kinnaird included. So yes a good piece of glass, but the stipple engraving is the thing here ;) :)

Just keep them (the 'ammer and nails") away from the glass! :-D
-
Kept far, far apart ;D ;D ;D
-
It would be interesting to see an looking through the bowl with the writing the right way round Keith ;) :)
Now there's a challenge!!
Cheers, Nigel
