Hi
Have bought these two at an auction recently.
I'm not sure if the one is p ysart, but would really like an experts opinion of them, if possible
Many thanks

Hi Mindie, welcome to the GMB.
Sorry to say this, but neither of these weights was made by Paul Ysart. But both could have been made by other members of the Ysart family and I think they are both likely to be from the Ysart Brothers (Vasart) period 1946 to 1955.
The first could have been made by any of the Ysart men at the Ysart Brothers works - but there is also a possibility that it was made after that period, at the Vasart Ltd works (1956 - 1964) or perhaps even in the early years of Strathearn Glass (1964 - 1980). [Each company in turn was a renaming of the previous.]
The second is most likely to have been made by the father, Salvador Ysart. It contains several canes that are generally said to be "Salvador's canes". To people like me, with a detailed interest in Ysart weights, it is a very nice example and a good reference for the individual canes.
Please provide dimensions for both weights - diameter and height, and for the first one, the diameter of the remains of the circular label.

Thank you so much for replying - so glad I asked now !!!
The one with the label is 5.5 cm high and the other 5. Cm high
Taken more photos 😀

Forgot to say the label is more of a cloth than paper

Thanks for the extra info and images. I can confirm that the "label" (or whatever) is too big for what I was thinking about.
It is up to you whether you leave the round "cloth / paper" thing on the base. However, by removing it, and seeing how the weight is finished might give a good clue as to the period in which it was made.

Hi Kevin
Again thank you so much for your time in checking these two out for me
Hopefully this picture will be the answer !!
Again I really appreciate it

Well I think it may be a fake lol
Just held it up to the light and it looks like it's been made in two parts ???
The design of the weight has a little glass dome over it and then the rest of the glass on top like they did a small one and decided to make it bigger with more glass ? Or is this normal lol !! I've tried to take a photo - you can see the 'noise' of the smaller dome and then quite clear above
Thanks again

Sorry !! My ignorance- just checked the other one and it's the same with the little dome & then larger one.
Thanks again

Yes, generally, the dome will be formed from at least two gathers of clear glass. If the temperatures of the parts being joined are not sufficiently equal, a layer of minute bubbles can be trapped - and that is what can be seen as a distinct layer within the clear dome, or in and around the canes.
Thanks for the picture of the base without the "whatever" stuck onto it. That type of finish - rough grinding with the central "lump" still showing, where the pontil rod was cracked off, is consistent with other weights that I know are from the Ysart Brothers period (or possibly 1930s for some).

Thanks again Kevin, you be been great to pass your knowledge on !
Absolutely fascinating 😀

I thought the blue one was the good one - put them on eBay and the other one has gone potty !! Lol. Not that I'm complaining :o
