Title: French Green Opaline Vases - ?Baccarat?
Post by: antonizz on March 31, 2017, 08:18:16 PM
Hello everybody,

I just bought these 2 opaline vases online.
They have a very nice green color.

I immediately thought about Baccarat when I saw them,
but that's really only based on a feeling I had.

Could anybody tell me more about it?

I believe they are:
*French.
*Ca. 1860-1880 maybe.
*Handblown.
*Pontilmark has been polished.
*3 Gold rims.  (bottom, top, and middle).
*Outside of the vase has somekind of accid finish.

Thank you very much!
R. Antonis

do they have a very small polished pontil mark in the middle of the base?
Your photograph isn't clear enough to see it  :-[

And are the rims cut and polished, or are they rounded and firepolished?

And are they uranium glass?

I think it is mould blown (no polished pontil mark - the base is just how it came out of the mould I think) and the rim is cut and polished/gilded.

This is not a method I associate with French glass (though that does not mean it isn't).
But I would think this is Bohemian.  Perhaps something like Josephinenhutte?

Probably 1860s is about right and have you tested to see if they are uranium glass under a blacklight?

Mould blown could be possible. You're the expert !  ;)

I have tested them with a very small blacklight (from a loupe),
and I don't believe it's uranium glass.

By the way I'm still very happy with these vases.
I've had a very beautiful green opaline box in the past, that would fit these perfectly.
Unfortunately I had to sell it a while ago.

+ I payed €40,00 for these, including shipment (within the Netherlands).
So I think I did well.

I was just shook when I followed the track&trace code, saw it was delivered a couple of houses further on my block.
Then I went there to pick them up..  Somebody else has picked them up earlier that day!!  ???
Turned out the shipper filled in the wrong house number  :P

I am very definitely not an expert ... and very far from it.

I could be wrong.  But that is where I would start searching first :)

I'm pretty sure they are uranium glass. And I'm with M on Bohemian

Here are the pictures I took in the dark, with the blacklight.
The vase doesn't really change colors.
I assume it should light up like the dirty spots in the vase do. [last picture]

That's the bright green uranium glow; definitely uranium glass

I'm not really sure to be honest.
Or maybe it's hard to see bcause it's a green vase?

And by the way, what is the purpose of having uranium in the glass?

I am sure it's uranium glass (I have hundreds of pieces of uranium glass). Uranium adds depth of colour and vibrancy to green glass when it's seen in daylight. On its own, uranium provides a rich yellow colour

Well, I think I should have me a new/brighter blacklight,
and make some new pictures to convince myself  :P

What you show is exactly what you would expect with any blacklight shining on uranium glass; that is the uranium glow.

Haha okay. I'm very willing to believe you.

I just wanted to be a 100% sure, instead of the 80% I was.
Because I don't want to sell it, saying it's uranium glass, while there's a chance it could be otherwise.

Thank you  ;D
