Title: Isle of Wight paperweight ID?
Post by: Marc1976 on April 19, 2017, 05:17:16 PM
Hi all.

I picked this paperweight up recently and I'm trying to find the design name. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

No name, I believe. I'd suspect this was an experiment or a piece from the makers' shelves.
Unless it's completely something else and the label mysteriously emigrated there. ;D
But the colours do look similar to those used on ranges from around that period.

Thanks Sue. I have searched through the Wikidot site and found nothing similar.

This vase I had from an un-named experimental colourway has the same colours in it and I'm fairly sure it had a black triangular label.

Serendipity.  ;D
That vase had the same enamels on it, as are in your weight. The same opaque colours, the same clear ones. (the dark green is clear).
This helps to convince me the label did not migrate from somewhere else, despite the design of the weight not being very typical of IoWSG, meaning it had to be something experimental or from the Makers' Shelf.

I believe this egg paperweight came from a range called 'Flowers, Eggs and Lollipops' produced from 1980 to 1983. The label is correct for that date. They were extremely variable and had no set colours. There is a similar egg here: http://iowstudioglass.wikidot.com/exp#1980s (http://iowstudioglass.wikidot.com/exp#1980s).

Hope this helps.

I had a look through the museum's collection of eggs from the 'Flowers, Eggs and Lollipops' range and found this one, which is almost identical.

Thanks, Anton. I bet it must feel absolutely wonderful to be able to say;

"I had a look through the museum's collection of... " just like that! 8) 8) 8)

I have just added a dedicated page for this collection: http://iowstudioglass.wikidot.com/flowerseggslollipops (http://iowstudioglass.wikidot.com/flowerseggslollipops)

I have another half dozen colourways to add. There are four at the moment. I hope this helps.
