Hello survivors of the heat wave,I came across this cool sapphire understated vase on one of the really hot days early this week,I'm fairly sure it's the piece in the whitefriars 1949 catalogue described as 9301 although I can't find one online? It's described as 4" but is I fact 5 1/4" in ht.....is it?and are they rare?..thanks.

I'm not an expert, but it could be Wuidart, see the 7th diagram.

the W56 shown in Leslie Jackson (I don't pretend to understand, but Jackson offers several alternative pattern Nos. against this one shape, in her book), agrees with the shape of Della's link to W56 .............. but I'd suggest that neither of those really agree with the shape of bat's vase.
The difference appears to be in the curvature of the outline - quite pronounced in Jackson and Della's link - more so than this piece, and the optic ribbing - which should be pronounced - looks absent? Does this vase have strong optic moulding? W56 is from the Wealdstone range ..... c. 1930 - 35.
But this one does look to be sapphire .............. I always remember getting taken to task some years back by Emmi Smith for forgetting the word has two 'pees'. We've not heard from Emmi for a long time - I hope she's is fit and well still. :)

Thanks for the replies ,yes there is optic ribbing that I couldn't capture very well,it stops about 2/3rds of the way up,I wouldn't say pronounced though.
-
I should look more carefully - the other patterns in Della's link are more like the shape of this piece - less curvature to the outline shape, and the size is close, so possibly a match for W 73.
-
Thanks everyone, but I think I'm being a bit thick and can't see the match ? It does look very much like a larger 9301 to my eye,did they get all the measurements correct?
-
Take a look here. http://www.whitefriars.com/forum/index.php?topic=3778.0
You have the piece in hand to compare to this photo.
You can expect a few mm's difference, but not " s and Whitefriars were really good at cataloguing things.

Thanks for your help della and I hate to appear a pedant but I think mine is at it's widest lower down and tapering to a narrower opening, maybe the vertical ribbing on mine altered the shape a bit?It appears almost colourless on the main body,oh dear another back door whitefriars piece maybe?

The Wuidart pieces have horizontal ribbing but Bat's has vertical ribbing, so no cocoa there

Hi, an important point to mention is the measurements here were not done at Whitefriars. These were added to the pics by Patrick Hogan where he estimated them as they stated the hand drawings were 1/4 size. I had a small collection of Wuidart at the time and I measured the ones I had to add an accurate measurement to some of them.

Thanks for the info WH...Just as a summary for my sake as much as anyone else my piece is closest in shape to 9301,but 9301 is described as 4" in height and mine is just under 5 1/4 "....The nearest in shape ant height in the Wuidart series is W73 (page 7)but W73 has horizontal ribs where as mine has vertical ribs......Finally W76 (page8) has vertical ribbing although it goe s to the top and mine fades 2/3rds of the way up plus the shape and height are quite different.

Hi, its not a 9301. I think this is Whitefriars Wuidart w72 in Lido Blue. I should have mentioned the Wuidart range is definitely found with different mouldings than depicted in the pics, i have found pieces that are pictured as vertical rib and they are wave ribbed for example.
-
Here is an example of a w27 which pictured as vertical rib but is rib waved.

Great, thanks very much WH.W72 looks the ticket and I'm glad to have it,there's a real calmness about it with the understated colouring adding to the cool blue mood.
