Title: Verification and Value please: Murano Paperweight. Tight Murrine Clustering
Post by: carlovision on September 11, 2017, 01:06:39 AM
Victorian Era Baccarat-like Paperweight?... of bunched Millefiori (of Murrine Cane/Rod) paperweight, Original Sticker Murano.

This charming Victorian Era Baccarat-resembling paperweight is of a rare very bulbous or teardrop shape which allows for the magnifying of its multicolored and tightly-bunched French or Baccarat millefiori design.

This close packing of the millefiori and magnifying quality indicates Baccarat as it is a prime example of the glass working intricacies which Victorian Era artisans achieved to produce intrigue in the colors and shapes therein, however this weight was made in Murano as denoted by its age-worn sticker. The base has light but appropriate use consistent with its age.

An Homage? Were Murano's artisans in the Victorian Era mimicking the French company Baccarat's adaptation of Murano weights?

Paperweight has true provenance bearing an additional sticker of the weight's number from the catalog of an important deceased New Orleans collector, Felix H. Kuntz the Dean of Americana.

Dimensions: About 2-1/2" tall and 3" in diameter. There is some very light fogginess on top of the paperweight. And there is some wreathing in the clear upper half.

A quick review of eBay should give you an ide of value. Off the top, I would say $50-75.00.

Hi.  I don't thnk there is any good eveidence to say that this is a Victorian era piece - more likely 1920s -1930s. I think Mildawg is right on value - maybe a bit optimistic.

Possibly made by Avem, if so more like 1950s or 60s especially given that generic label which is found on items from different makers, pretty sure a version is still in use. More examples of paperweights and a figure here: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,59597.0.html
